The few weeks postpartum are filled with marvel and delight as you welcome your new baby into your life. It can also be a really hectic and challenging time for mothers as they adjust to life with a newborn.
In many cultures, millions of women temporary adhere to postpartum hibernation (or confinement), a practice for new mothers to rest at home with the assistance of a family member, confinement nanny or a postpartum doula (support person).
In Ayurveda, a 5000 year old Indian healing tradition, this period is considered a sensitive time for mothers. In India mothers are encouraged to abstain
from chores, food preparation, cleaning or even hosting guests. Mothers are given the often undervalued need for deep rest and time with their newborn.
With the disconnection of family through distance as well as busy and stressful lives, many mothers suffer with the little to no family support around them.
Maiaveda has responded to this and now offers post partum doula care
for new mothers in the comfort of their own home with Marye O’Brien.
An Ayurvedic Plan for Postpartum Care
Marye is a qualified Ayurvedic Practitioner, Holistic Counsellor and Maiaveda’s founder, she also has had a former life in Community Service Management within Local Government. Maiaveda is now offering nurturing and recovery support to the mother who may be experiencing deep emotional shifts, in need of postpartum healing and may be feeling isolated and confused.
The Ayurvedic approach to postpartum care assists new mothers with oxytocin release to assist with bonding, swifter recovery for mothers as well as mental and emotional support.
A mother’s first priorities is bonding with her newborn, falling in love and resting. Herbs and simple practices can support those goals and ensure speedy recovery and a strong foundation for the new family.
Marye understands that the first weeks after birth are like no other, and encourages women to be willing to receive the help they may need to heal, bond and be cared for.

This service is to be redeemed WITHIN 3 MONTHS OF BIRTH for maximum benefit.
Any unused hours can be redeemed at the Maiaveda Holistic Health Retreat & Spa in Kyneton.
Travel over 40 kilometres from Kyneton will incur an additional travel fee.
Option 1
40 Hours – $4800
- One hour consultation to develop individual support plan
- Up to 3 in residence visits per week; each visit is 3 hours (equals 11 x 3 hour home visits)
- 6 hours of these services are to be used within the Maiaveda Holistic Health Centre in Kyneton to provide new mothers specialised Ayurvedic therapies administered by Marye, for example, Kati Basti for back pain, Shirodhara for support with sleep deprivation/stress – these therapies will be tailored to needs of individual.
- In home services to be redeemed Monday – Friday during day light hours
- Treatments at Maiaveda in Kyneton can be redeemed Monday – Sunday during our opening hours by appointment.
Option 2
20 Hours – $2400
- One hour consultation to develop individual support plan
- One x 3 hour in residence visit per week (equals 5 x 3 hour home visits)
- 4 hours of these services are to be used within the Maiaveda Holistic Health Centre in Kyneton to provide new mothers specialised Ayurvedic therapies administered by Marye, for example, Kati Basti for back pain, Shirodhara for support with sleep deprivation/stress – these therapies can be tailored to needs of individual.

Option 3
Hire a Doula for the day (weekdays only, during daylight hours)
Minimum of 3 hours, based on $110/hour
Support can be tailored to your needs on that particular day, for example:
- Pick up groceries on the way
- Ayurvedic Massage, tailored to your needs, for instance support to relieve back, shoulder or neck pain
- Reflexology, can do whilst nursing/holding baby
- Hold baby allowing you precious time to shower or bathe
- Light housework, meal preparation
- Vaginal Herbal Steam
